The Architecture of Intimacy

A day long embodied exploration of human attachment through the lens of mindfulness and contact improvisation with a specific focus on the relationship between form and feelings in solo, partnered and group movement. This will be a chance to explore more “meaty” and physical connections in dance in a safe and playful way.

Connections are intrinsic to life.  The quality of those connections affects the quality of our life and the quality of our connections in this moment are strongly influenced by our earliest experiences of contact and connection with our parents or caregivers.

Very early in life, in the womb and through the first few years, assumptions form about ourselves and the world based on the presence or absence of consistent nourishing connection and the amount and quality of the touch we received.

These embodied dispositions towards intimacy are known as our attachment “style” and they also manifest in the unconscious shapes and habits of our bodies.  Our “style” of attachment affects many aspects of our life, particularly in the realm of intimate one-on-one and group connections. On the dance floor as in life, it determines how we enter and exit intimacy, how long we linger, how much weight we give and receive and how deep we allow ourselves to go.

Our bodies and our minds are not separate but are different ends of a continuum. We can learn about our patterns of thoughts by exploring the shapes and feeling states of our bodies and we can literally change our thoughts through changing the architecture of the body.

Contact Improvisation is an effective lens to explore our attachment styles, gain insight into the organizing beliefs behind them, and begin to provide the missing experiences that those styles need to become more secure. By working with feeling states and shapes in the body, the work has an immediacy and power that is not available in talk based therapy and other explorations.

During this Living Bridges workshop we will;

  • build a container of safety, trust, and self-study
  • establish clear boundaries
  • explore barriers to nourishment
  • develop our own foundation and connection with earth
  • expand our capacity to give and receive support
  • learn simple physical “hacks” to change our emotional state by changing the body

NO DANCE EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED, this workshop is for all people who want to deepen their embodiment and understanding of themselves in relationship. Because of the physical nature of the work, a certain level of physical ability and freedom is necessary, please contact me if you think this might be an issue and want to discuss it further.

What folks are saying:

“The space was held beautifully with depth and humor and lots of warmth. His open approach to whatever works for each individual by voicing their resistance helped me feel more comfortable and dive in deeper.”

“This is some amazing, deep work that Matthew is enabling with much grace.”

“I feel so much SPACE in me, I don’t know what do do with it yet.”

“Thank you! You created the most open, welcoming, safe space, and have so much compassion and so much to share!”

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO HAVE A HAPPY BIRTH

This two day Birthshop is for:

unnamed

  • Anyone who wants more love, connection, and purpose in life and who feels that there is something holding them back.
  • Expectant parents, especially Mothers and Fathers who want to give their babies a head start in life by not passing on their own traumas to them.
  • Artists and other change makers who are looking to access and unleash more of their creative power in the world.
  • People in the helping professions such as therapists, counselors, doulas, midwives, bodyworkers, coaches, etc. who want to gain insight into themselves and to learn new tools to support their clients more effectively.
  • Parents of children who may have had difficult or traumatic births. By clearing their own experiences of their births and their children’s births, parents are able to support their children’s well-being by providing a more neutral and supportive nervous system for their children to access.

Our experiences in the womb, during birth, and in the first few years, help set the template for how we will experience the rest of life. They especially affect our sense of belonging and well-being in our body and influence how we move forward and deal with challenges in our life.

Up to 95% of industrial births are considered traumatic for baby and/or mother. The implications of this are that for a majority of us, our first imprint of life on this planet is charged with fear and discomfort. This under addressed area of personal and societal trauma has major implications on all human systems from our bodies to our families to our society’s to our ecology.

While modern birthing practices have made birth safer in many ways, the movement to medicalize birth has changed it from a personal, human, and natural process into a medical “procedure.” What happens is the the medical system can become a mediator between mothers (and fathers) and their children. Particularly between Mothers and their ability to connect with the wisdom of their own birthing bodies. In many ways, the medical establishment has intruded too far into the natural process of birth and it is possible that many of the medical “interventions” that are used (pitocin, forceps, iv’s and other movement restrictions, c-section, etc) are necessary because many mother’s feel unsafe  and fearful in the hospital and that can negatively affect their ability to relax into the profound opening (physically, emotionally and spiritually) that birth requires. You can watch a 10 min preview of the ground breaking film Birth as We Know It here to get a better idea of the kind of forces that are unfolding during a birth when a mother (and father) is supported in that opening. You can also read more about studies that are exploring the link between childhood traumas and later health outcomes here.

Birthshops are designed to:

* Help to CLEAR the traumatic residue of these early experiences from our nervous systems.
* SET A NEW BASELINE of wellness and belonging.
* GIVE you the important missing experience of being deeply welcomed to your life in safety and love.

Instead of trying to fix the old “programming” (by re-living the initial shock of being born), it’s most effective to just acquire a whole new vivid, rich, and wonderful birth experience!

The Birthshop combines powerful somatic visualizations, meditation, somatic re-education, breathing exercises and one-on-one work supported by the group.

It’s deep, it’s profoundly healing and it’s fun!

What participants are saying:

“A Birthshop is a rare and excellent opportunity to look into your birth and receive healing around it. The healing can be all-encompassing to include your ancestry, your whole family system, life circumstances at the time of conception, gestation, birth and early years of development. Matthew is very skilled in holding space and guiding the process for the group and each individual. His listening and vision is deep, his language is clear and useful, and his heart wisdom is full of compassion and knowing. He also uses touch very effectively to help the nervous system integrate the experience. I highly recommend Birthshop if you’re at all called to the work. As a healer and doula, I see it as a very special way to bring more health, consciousness and kindness to yourself and all your relations, and therefore to our planet.” -Jen

“This workshop was very profound for me in two different ways: one as a preparation for our baby’s birth and the other as a woman in the world. I experienced the way i would like my baby and all babies to feel when they come to this life. I also discovered a lot a bout myself I had not known. I learned from Matthew as a facilitator but I also learned about him as a real person, as a husband, father and individual being.” -Paulina

“I am 61 year old male with children in their mid 20’s. Attending a birthshop would seem a little late… but I found it to be a very effective and powerful method. Matthew creates a safe place for connecting with my feelings and is a wonderful guide in this process. I would recommend this work to anybody and especially young couples. ” -Rhoads

“Matthew’s uncanny ability to allow people to open up to their innermost sanctums in safe and nurturing way is inspiring and just magical.” -Tim

“I tapped into deeply held material that seemed to originate from my Father’s struggles and pain, and how I was relating to that as I grew up. I had a very deep release of some / most of that energy, and felt my heart and essence very purely and clearly afterwards. It was quite remarkable. One of those things where you don’t know how much you were holding onto and affected by it, until its released. Amazing!” -WS
